The Judge American Idol Really Wanted to Replace Simon Cowell

(HMG) – We have heard recently, that before Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler became front runners, Elton John and Barry Manilow were offered the gig. But according to Nikki Finke at Deadline Hollywood the judge American Idol’s producers really wanted to replace Simon Cowell on the show with David Geffen. Geffen founded both Asylum and Geffen Records, which have signed artists like Bob Dylan, The Eagles, Joni Mitchell, John Lennon, Nirvana, and Guns N’ Roses. Idol producer Simon Fuller of 19 Entertainment first approached Geffon, 4 months ago, before Nigel Lythgoe became executive producer. “It would have been his if he’d wanted it,” a source tells Finke. “Because Cowell is a bad imitation of David.” But, when approached about the job, Geffen allegedly asked, “Why should I do this?”
