David McCullough High School Commencement Speech: You Are Not Special!
This is pretty great.
In a commencement speech to Wellesley High School seniors this week, teacher David McCullough Jr. delivered a highly unusual message for such an occasion. Simply put, he told the class before him: you are not special.
Said the son of a Pulitzer Prize-winning historian:
“Think about this: even if you’re one in a million, on a planet of 6.8 billion that means there are nearly 7,000 people just like you.”

What was McCullough’s point? That accolades have come to mean more than “genuine achievement.” As a consequence, he

(HMG Celebrity News) – Taking on another dramatic role, New York magazine reports Bill Murray is set to portray polio-afflicted politician president Franklin Delano Roosevelt in an upcoming adaptation titled “Hyde Park on the Hudson to be directed by Morning Glory’s Roger Michell.” Oddly the production will be bankrolled by Film4, who apparently passed on funding The King’s Speech in their eagerness to get this film which also features King George VI. Written by playwright Richard Nelson, the movie recounts a June 1939 weekend when King George VI and his queen visited President Franklin

Did Serene Branson Suffer a Stroke On the Air?
Footage of CBS reporter Serene Branson losing control over her speech while covering the Grammys Sunday sparked serious questions about her health.
She appeared light-headed and began uttering nonsense in what clearly wasn’t mere stumbling over words, prompting a call to paramedics thereafter.
While it was feared (and widely reported) that Serene Branson suffered a stroke on air, she was examined and determined to be fine following this:

Bristol Palin’s sex life is a common topic of discussion on celebrity gossip websites. Washington University students don’t want to hear about it, though.
At least not in person, for a hefty fee.
The Dancing With the Stars finalist was dropped from a planned February speaking engagement at the St. Louis college following student protests.
Bristol Palin, who got pregnant at 17, was invited by the Student Health Advisory Committee to talk abstinence during Student Sexual Responsibility Week.

Robert De Niro Acceptance Speech: Funny or Foul?
Ricky Gervais hosted the 68th annual Golden Globe Awards, creating a bit of a stir while doing so. But that wasn’t unexpected.
Robert De Niro, conversely, is known as one of the quieter, more intense actors out there. That’s why it made it so shocking when the icon accepted the Cecil B. DeMille Award last night and went off on hot topics such as immigration and Megan Fox.
“I’m sorry more members of the foreign press aren’t with us tonight,” he said. “But many were deported right before the show along with most of the waiters. And Javier Bardem.”

Ricky Gervais kicked off the 2011 Golden Globe Awards by staying true to his vow to be more subversive than he was a year ago. Just ask Tom Cruise and John Travolta, at whom the comedian aimed this opening joke:
“Also not nominated was I Love You Philip Morris, Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor. Two heterosexual characters pretending to be gay. So the complete opposite of some famous Scientologists, then… Probably. My lawyers helped me with the wording of that joke. They’re not here.”

It’s official. Brett Favre has retired from the NFL.
The quarterback legend made the announcement at a press conference Sunday. He is currently listed as questionable for training camp in August.
“One season does not define me,” said Favre, referring to a lackluster final year with Minnesota, and possibly the Jenn Sterger scandal as well.
Asked how this is different from his previous nine retirements, he cited his myriad injuries, adding “I know it’s time” and “I have no regrets.”

Rupert Everett Calls Jennifer Aniston’s Career Choices “Tasteless”
(HMG Celebrity News) – I don’t think this is going to go over well with Jennifer Aniston’s many loyal fans, but Rupert Everett as per usual slammed a fellow actor or two. During an interview with BBC Radio 4, about how homosexuals fare in Hollywood, the conversation lead into the 51-year-old British actor declaring that certain stars will always remain on Hollywood’s A-list because they are loved by the studios, no matter how poorly they perform at the box office:

[HMG Celebrity News] – Fans of ‘The Hills’ or ‘Entourage’ will be happy to hear that two stars of those shows are now an item; Jeremy Piven has found love with Jason Wahler’s ex-partner, Katja Decker Sadowski.
Having already inflamed the affections of January Jones and Dita Von Teese, 45-year old Jeremy was spied standing in line with 22-year old Katja at LA’s ‘Arc Light Cinema’ late on Sunday.
“Jeremy and Katja looked really happy,” a source told Radar. “They were holding hands as they waited to see ‘King’s Speech,’ and they were cuddling throughout the film too. Afterwards they left in a
