How did those in attendance react to the event? We’ve collected a series of Tweets and posted them below a montage of photos from the ceremony’s red carpet…
Pink: “Had so much fun 2night Thanks MTV and VMA’s- thanks to all the lovely gorgeous fans/friends. And I’m out. Hello Europe! Here we come. XXX”
Rihanna: #RihannaNavy we won Video of the Year!!! Thank you for voting! My night was major! Jah bless”

Two talented singers. Two different styles.
Before Taylor Swift’s stage-diving VMA performance, she walked the red carpet in a sleek white J. Mendel pantsuit and classic red lips at the annual MTV gala.
Meanwhile, Alicia Keys rocked a one-shoulder, draped silver gown and asymmetrical ‘do to boot before her collaboration with Nicki Minaj (and Gabby Douglas).
There’s really no wrong answer with these two, but whose MTV Video Music Awards style do you like better? Cast your vote in THG’s latest Fashion Face-Off!
Miley Cyrus did her best impression of Pink on the red carpet of the MTV Video Music Awards last night, showing up at the event with her short blonde hair spiked and in a mohawk.
It was a jarring new look for the star, especially considering Pink was also in attendance – and also rocking a very similar style.
Did Miley outdo the original? Will Pink always reign supreme as the most hardcore of all female recording artists? Weigh in now!
Chris Brown and Rihanna totally kissed at last night’s MTV VMAs. No joke.
Was it just a simple greeting between friends (on the lips)? Was it more?
You tell us after you watch and read into it for yourself right here:
At some point during tonight’s 2012 MTV Video Music Awards, Rih was walking through the crowd and planted one on Breezy, her former boyfriend.
Her former boyfriend who beat her senseless, but who she openly said (to Oprah Winfrey, through tears nonetheless) is still the love of her life.

Lady Gaga certainly did not leave anything in the bag in her bid to become Jo Calderone at the MTV Video Music Awards in Los Angeles Sunday.
The pop star didn’t just wear men’s clothing and fake stubble. Lady Gaga took dressing in drag to the extreme, wearing a prosthetic penis, even.
Seriously, she was. Talk about getting into character.
Perhaps that was the impetus behind the revelation that Gaga/Jo used to pleasure himself to Britney Spears when he was a kid. He/she didn’t say.
“I am from New Jersey,” Jo Calderone said. “My family is from Palermo, Sicily. I’m not a singer or a model orMore >
Sunday’s telecast of the MTV Video Music Awards set a record with 12.4 million viewers, the largest audience ever for the network, according to reports.
The previous high was set by … the previous week’s Jersey Shore.
The VMAs, a celebrity gossip bonanza and the one night every year that the network that once revolutionized music pretends to still care about it, were up nine percent in total viewers from last year. It was the top cable telecast of the year so far.
Among the many highlights? A rare Britney Spears appearance, Beyonce’s pregnancy announcement, The Hunger Games trailer andMore >
Chris Brown flew through the air. Beyonce made a major announced AND performed on stage. And Lady Gaga channeled her inner Jo Calderone.
As always, the MTV Video Music Awards delivered a night of drama, humor, talent… and did we mention fashion? THG is your one-stop online shop for everything VMA, as our coverage is linked to below…

- Lady Gaga, errr, Jo Calderone, used to enjoy herself to thought of Britney
Hey, Lady Gaga is just calling it like she sees it. Or at least like Jo Calderone, her male alter ego who performed at the MTV VMAs last night, sees it.
Jo put on quite the show on stage, but also in the press room, where he weighed in with some, um, interesting remarks about Britney Spears.
Asked if he would hook up with Britney, Calderone said this …
“Well, maybe if she wants to, you know what I’m saying … She is f–king hot. Britney’s f–king hot. I don’t know. Gaga is my girl, but Britney’s f–king hot – this is f–king Britney Spears! Didn’t you jerk off to Britney when you were aMore >
At the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards, Kim Kardashian made her first public appearance since getting married in a quaint, private ceremony last weekend. And she did it alone, without new husband Kris Humphries by her side.
Might there be trouble in E! ratings paradise?!?
As for her true love – posing on a red carpet – Kim sparked in a silver dress at the event, which was in contrast to Kreayshawn’s Disney-inspired outfit. The Best New Artist nominee created major buzz with her fashion choice, but will it be enough to knock off Kardashian? You decide…
Katy Perry was one of the big MTV VMA winners last night – perhaps the biggest winner of all, taking home Video of the Year honors for “Firework.”
On the one hand, it seems a dubious call by MTV, given the talent she was competing against. On the flip side, the show are all arbitrary anyway.
Also, perhaps it’s not ridiculous to give a big award to an artist who achieved a feat only Michael Jackson had before with five #1 hits on one album.
What do you think? Was “Firework” Video of the Year worthy? Vote:

Cobra Starship performed its hit “You Make Me Feel … ” on the MTV Video Music Awards pre-show Sunday night. With the group was a special guest.
Singer and Britney Spears gal-pal Sabi started off the song riding down an escalator in a white blazer, ripped-up silver pants and red leather gloves.
“Cobra Starship and Sabi. How cool was that?” exclaimed pre-show host Selena Gomez, following her discussion of Justin Bieber’s “snake” earlier.
Do you agree with Selena’s take? Watch and see …
Seriously, some people suck.
Just a few months after she was released from a stint in rehab, largely due to an eating disorder, Demi Lovato walked the red carpet of the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards, as seen here:
Looking fabulous, Demi Lovato!
She looked great at the event, right? Not according to some idiotic Twitter followers.
Actually faced with criticism over her appearance, Lovato was forced to defend herself via the following message: “Guess what, I’m healthy and happy, and if you’re hating on my weight you obviously aren’t. #UNBROKEN.”
Very well said, Demi. The singerMore >
First, Beyonce showed off her baby bump. Then, she took to the stage at the VMAs last night and showed off her unmatched talent.
The singer belted out a version of “Love on Top,” highlighted by a repetition of the chorus to close the number and then a pregnant pose by the artist. Cut to backstage, where Kanye West congratulated Jay-Z as the crowd went wild and we had a legitimately touching few moments.
Once again, congratulations to this couple. Sit back and watch an expecting Beyonce in action now:
For a couple that once tried to hide their relationship, Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez are very much out in the open now. Case in point:
During the Selena-hosted pre-show at this evening’s MTV Video Music Awards, Gomez interviewed her boyfriend and tried to ask about his nomination in the category of Best Male Video. But all Justin wanted to talk about was his pet snake… named Johnson.
He then leaned in and gave Selena a long smooch, as she tried to remain professional and millions of girls around the country bowed their head in sadness. Watch now:More >
MTV airs the Video Music Awards tonight at 8 p.m. EST. But Adam Levine won’t be tuning in.
The Maroon 5 frontman and judge on The Voice let his feelings be known about the network in a Tweet last night, writing: “The VMAs [are the] one day a year when MTV pretends to still care about music. I’m drawing a line in the sand. F–k you, VMAs.”
Adam Levine is going after MTV and American Idol these days. Who will be next?!?
The singer and his band won a VMA trophy in 2004, but they are not nominated in any category this year.
