Mel Gibson appeared on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno last night and surprisingly, he willingly brought up his most recent secretly recorded meltdown.
He joked about it repeatedly, no less.
The now-infamous Mel Gibson rant, in which he RAGED at Joe Eszterhas (and was taped in his own home, unwittingly, by Eszterhas’ son), was over the top, he conceded. Still, Mel believes his privacy was violated and his actions were “justified.” Why?

Screenwriter Joe Eszterhas, who was collaborating with Mel Gibson on his ill-fated film The Maccabees before claiming in a letter Mel Gibson hates Jews, says he’s got proof that he witnessed the latest rage-filled rants from the troubled star.
His teenage son secretly recorded much of it, Eszterhas says.
“A lot of the stuff is on tape,” he tells TMZ. What stuff?
He says the recordings were made in Costa Rica by his son Nick, though he would not say if the following alleged comments by Mel were captured:

Nader Sharif claims Mel bilked him out of $200,000 by cajoling him into investing in a recycled rubber company. Obviously, who didn’t see THAT coming?
Sharif filed a lawsuit in June, in which he also claims Mel Gibson tried to mow him down in July, after the two ran into each other at a Costa Rican bakery.

It finally is all over between Mel Gibson and Oksana Grigorieva, who settled their custody dispute in court. But there is a lingering disagreement on one point.
Oksana’s lawyers touted her music credentials in court, but Mel made it clear (a bit more eloquently than on his taped rants) he deeply regrets supporting her career.
Mel says he spent a small fortune to produce a CD and video, and even paid for a studio for the “horrible” singer he’s now “embarrassed” to have promoted.

Hopefully, the feuding couple’s icy relationship will continue to thaw in the coming months and years for the sake of Lucia, an adorable 18-month-old.

Gibson’s lawyer, Blair Berk, met with Judge Stephanie Sautner (yes, also the judge in the Lindsay Lohan saga) to present proof that Gibson is compliant.
The troubled actor has paid his fines, performed his community service by visiting a Guatemalan hospital, and is earning high marks from a psychiatrist.

Mel Gibson spoke with children born with deformities at a hospital in Guatemala this week, a visit that was part of his community service.
The actor’s publicist, Alan Nierob, said that Gibson has been in the Central American nation for days working with Mending Kids International.
Nierob said Gibson is spending more time in Guatemala than the 16 hours of community service that a plea deal calls for him to perform.

Oksana Grigorieva’s lawyer, Dan Horowitz, told the judge in the couple’s custody case this a.m. that he may not even introduce the tirades into evidence.
Horowitz backing off the tapes comes a few weeks after he told the judge that Oksana would be dropping domestic violence allegations against Gibson.

The L.A. County District Attorney filed a single misdemeanor battery charge against Mel Gibson today. The actor, as expected, pleaded no contest.
The misdemeanor specifically targets someone who cohabits or has a child with the alleged victim, but is less severe than felony domestic abuse.
Mel will not receive jail time for the alleged attack on Oksana Grigorieva, but will continue to undergo counseling and be on 36 months’ probation.
One of the terms of probation – he cannot use violence against anyone. Mel may continue to have “peaceful contact” with Oksana going forward.
