With the calendar about to flip to 2013, THG is taking a look back at the year that was, specifically the stars who made it memorable via their songs, sex tapes, naked photos, arrests or – in rare cases – all of the above.

Britney Spears’ earnings edged Taylor Swift’s to make her the top-earning woman in music over the past year by a whisker – and not strictly due to album sales.
Records, her X Factor gig, endorsements and a perfume line netted Britney Spears $58 million last year; Taylor was a close second with an estimated $57 million.
A contract with CoverGirl cosmetics, her own line of fragrances, countless hit songs and massive celebrity gossip attention made 2012 Swift’s year.
Rihanna earned an estimated $53 million to put her at No. 3, two spots up from last year, followed by Lady Gaga, whoMore >
Tom Cruise has had enough.
A tabloid target throughout his career, the A-lister has finally fired back at two supermarket tabloids for alleging that he’s a dead beat dad who abandoned daughter Suri following his divorce from Katie Holmes.
Bert Fields, the star’s attorney, has filed a $50 million defamation lawsuit against Life & Style for its July 30 cover – which screamed SURI IN TEARS, ABANDONED BY HER DAD – and against In Touch for its above headline, which makes the same assertion.

This year’s Octomom porn film flew in the face of her earlier claims that she would never, ever appear in such immoral films. Why the change of heart?

Vanessa Bryant may not be a gold-digging, domineering basketball wife … but she gave a quote earlier this week that certainly came off that way.
Regarding husband Kobe Bryant, she told New York Magazine, “I certainly would not want to be married to somebody that can’t win championships.”
“If you’re sacrificing time away from my family and myself for the benefit of winning championships, then winning a championship should happen every single year.”
Yeah. Probably not the best word choice. Vanessa is now setting the record straight, clarifying to TMZ that she loves and supports Kobe, noMore >

His professional life, that is. The topic of Kristen Stewart and Rupert Sanders was never broached once.
Instead, Pattinson delved into various topics related to Cosmopolis, the David Cronenberg-directed drama in which the actor stars as billionaire Eric Parker.
Most of the movie takes place inside a limo, with Pattinson’s character on the way to get a haircut. This, of course, led to the inevitable question: has Robert ever peed inside a car?
YES! “Well,More >
