Michelle Williams recalls shock of losing Heath Ledger
[HMG Celebrity News] – Heath Ledger’s role as the Joker in ‘Batman: The Dark Knight’ mesmerized fans and won the late actor an Oscar. But girlfriend Michelle Williams still struggling to come to terms with his loss.
“I’ve found meanings around the circumstance, but the actual event still doesn’t gel.” she told ABC about losing the father of her 5-year-old daughter, Matilda. “I can’t find a meaning for it. I can find meanings in things and friendships that have strengthened. I can find a lot in that, but not in why.”
Heath was found unconscious in his fourth-floor apartment on Broome Street in New York’s SoHo district on January 22, 2008. Paramedics tried to revive him but he was pronounced dead at 3.36pm. The cause of death was determined as an accidental overdose of prescription medications. Heath was just 28.
Michelle says the year after his death is still a blank to her;
“In a strange way, I miss that year, because all those possibilities that existed are gone,” the 30-year old actress told Nightline.
One way she found comfort and support for the loss was be reading Joan Didion’s 2005 book “The Year of Magical Thinking,” which recounts the author’s own experience of recovering from the death of her husband. Michelle says the book’s gripping exploration of grief was a source of comfort as she tried to cope with her feelings.
“It didn’t seem unlikely that he’d walk through a door or appear behind a bush,” she recalls. “It was a year of very magical thinking, and in some ways I’m sad to be moving away from it. I got obsessed for a while.
Since Heath’s loss Michelle has been slowly returning to work, and her latest role in ‘Blue Valentine’ is getting high praise. The film tells the story of a contemporary married couple [Michelle and Ryan Gosling] and charts the evolution of their connection over several years – warts and all.
The MPAA gave it an NC-17 rating, which would have killed its box-office chances, but they’ve now relented and it’s been recast as an ‘R,’ and opens on December 31.
